Social Work
Duke Children's social work team is part of the larger Department of Social Work at Duke University Hospital. Duke Children's clinical social workers assist children and their families who are coping with the stress of a new diagnosis, a chronic illness, or a variety of life situations and family circumstances. A community transition coordinator who links hospitalized children with resources in the community is also part of the Duke Children's social work team.

We provide services for the following:
- Adjustment to diagnosis and illness
- Grief and bereavement issues
- Family issues and relationship problems
- Psychosocial stressors
- School and behavior problems
- Mental health issues, e.g., depression and anxiety
- Substance use
- Child abuse and neglect/family violence
- Difficulties in adhering to medical treatment plan
- Legal issues
- Adoption, custody and divorce
- Resource needs
Appointments and Contact Information
Anyone can request a social work consultation for a Duke patient or family member. Patients and families can speak with their physician, nurse or any other member of the health care team to ask for a social worker.
