Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center is a comprehensive tertiary care hospital, treating a wide range of problems--from common to rare. Because of this, we can assemble some of the country's finest specialists on our multi-disciplinary teams to help with the complete range of pediatric plastic surgical conditions.

Duke has a long history and commitment to the treatment of cleft lip and palate. Duke's Comprehensive Craniofacial team is at the forefront of the past two decades of progress in understanding and treating craniofacial developmental conditions.

Craniofacial conditions treated include:

Your care team will usually include a craniofacial surgeon and a neurosurgeon. Other specialists may be consulted depending on your individual needs.

Additional caregivers may include specialists from dentistry, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, genetics, speech pathology and audiology, social work, child life, and neuroradiology.

For patients with the most complex conditions, we may suggest that families come to a multidisciplinary team conference. After you and your child meet with the team, you will receive a report detailing the consensus of their opinions.

Craniosynostosis

Duke is rapidly becoming one of the leading centers in the country for treating craniosynostosis, a congenital condition that impedes normal brain and skull growth. Duke’s surgeons perform 35 to 50 primary surgeries for craniosynostosis each year.

Duke’s experienced craniofacial surgeons collaborate with pediatric neurosurgeons to restore normal head shape as well as relieve any pressure on the growing brain, to ensure that growth and development continue normally.

Not every child will require surgery. Each patient is evaluated thoroughly to devise a treatment plan.

For the vast majority of children with craniosynostosis, growth and development proceed normally after treatment, with no further intervention needed.
