How You Can Help

naomi_isabella_2.jpg

The care we provide at Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center benefits thousands of families who come to Duke every year from around the region, the nation, and the world to find healing and hope.

The research we accomplish saves and enhances the lives of many more thousands of young people who may never set foot inside any of our facilities, but who will benefit from a novel surgical technique perfected by Duke pediatric surgeons, a vaccine that Duke pediatric immunologists were among the first to test, or a new diagnostic technology refined for use in children.

Your options for supporting our endeavors at Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center are as varied as the children we treat. You may want to make your gift today or partner with us to plan a transformational gift to underwrite research that could lead to a cure, fund a program to enhance the quality-of-life of our patients, or lay the foundation to build the future of Duke Children's. You may want to share your talents or host your own event.

With so many opportunities to help Duke Children's--we're sure you'll find an option that's personally rewarding. No matter which route you take, your generosity will make a difference in the lives of our young patients and their families.

Volunteer Policies

For detailed information about volunteer policies at Duke Children's events, read the sections below.

Volunteer Age Requirement

For safety reasons, volunteers at Duke Children's events must be age 18 or older. We greatly appreciate your volunteer efforts, however, we ask that you do not bring minor children. Although our events do benefit our young patients and their families, we are not equipped to provide child care services, nor is there an opportunity to fulfill your volunteer responsibilities while monitoring your child(ren)'s activities. This policy is designed to ensure that all volunteers and staff are able to perform their roles in a safe and productive manner and to prevent anyone from being placed at foreseeable risk.

Anyone (of any age) is welcome to volunteer for our Change Bandits program. For more information, please visit the Change Bandits web page.

Junior Volunteer Program

Regular volunteers at Duke must be 18 years of age or older. If you are between the ages of 14 and 17 years, however, the hospital has a Junior Volunteer program that operates during the summer months. Teens who are interested in the program should apply with the Duke University Hospital Volunteer Services Office from January through the end of March of each year.

The 2009 Junior Volunteer Program application packet will be available on this site as soon as it is available. Please remember that a student must complete at least one full summer of the Junior Volunteer Program before they will be eligible to volunteer throughout the school year.

Visit DukeHealth.org for detailed information about the Junior Volunteer Program.

Volunteer Tobacco and Alcohol Policies

Volunteers will refrain from the consumption of, use of, the possession of, the selling of, or any other involvement with illegal drugs or alcohol before or during their assigned volunteer hours or shifts at Duke Children's events. At such events, whether working or not, volunteers are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Consumption of alcohol or inappropriate behavior as a result of alcohol use is not considered to be professional behavior.

Volunteers will also refrain from the use of tobacco products during their assigned volunteer hours or shifts at Duke Children's events. There is no smoking or tobacco use permitted in or around the buildings at Duke University Health System, clinics, or hospitals (including Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center).

These policies are designed to ensure that all volunteers and staff are able to function in their respective roles in a safe and productive environment and to prevent others from being put at risk.
