Teddy Bear Ball

December 5, 2008
Durham Marriott at the Civic Center

Join us for an exciting evening
to benefit the kids at Duke!

The 19th annual Teddy Bear Ball to benefit Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center will be Friday, December 5, 2008. It is an evening full of the essence of the holidays. Guests browse and bid on hundreds of items while enjoying the tastes of the season. Be sure to sign up early for this year's sell-out event by contacting our office at dukekids@notes.duke.edu or (919) 667-2562.

We are excited to introduce our chairs of the 2008 Teddy Bear Ball, Dan and Wendy Cooper. Dan and Wendy are the parents of pediatric brain tumor patient, Matthew Cooper. The Cooper family commuted for a number of years from California for Matt's treatment. They have since relocated to Durham to be near Duke Children's. The decision was not easy, as Dan must now commute on a weekly basis to maintain his law practice in Northern California.  The Cooper family story is one of many that exemplifies the care, compassion and expertise provided at Duke Children's.

This year's fund-raising ball honors the passion that the Cooper family brings to helping their son, Matt, daily. The 2008 Teddy Bear Ball will represent the heart of why Duke Children's raises funds -- to better the lives of children and to let their smiles shine through.

About the Ball

The Teddy Bear Ball is the largest charity black-tie gala in the Triangle. Taking place the first Friday of December, the event gives sponsors, donors and guests the chance to don their finest apparel and enjoy fine food and company all in the name of helping sick children.

This year's presenting sponsor will welcome guests to the 19th annual ball beginning at 6 p.m. with the opening of the silent auction, heavy hors d'oeuvres and dessert table.

As in previous years, guests will be invited to partake in a wine tasting being sponsored by Nomacorc that will also begin at 6 p.m. Guests will then have the opportunity to bid on unique auction packages, each accompanied by a teddy bear during the Live Auction. The auction ends with the presentation of the 2008 Duke Children's Teddy Bear Ball Quilt, "Flights of Fancy." The quilt presentation will be followed by dancing to the music of The Casablanca Orchestra.

Our 2008 Duke Children's Teddy Bear Ball Quilt
"Flights of Fancy"

This year's Teddy Bear Ball signature quilt is entitled, "Flights of Fancy" and features whimsical birds created from fabrics that were hand-dyed, painted, collaged, beaded and stitched by hundreds of patients at Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center. This was accomplished in a series of fun, hands-on workshops led by textile artist Peg Gignoux. In addition, campers at Camp Kaleidoscope created dozens of yards of hand-painted and patterned fabrics. They composed artful collages by combining a variety of colors and shapes that serve as bright backgrounds for a series of original poems.
